Life at the Château: Splendor and misery in New France

Château Ramezay, Historic site and museum of Montreal

Life in Montréal in the 18th Century is presented in the vaults of the Château Ramezay, where the solid, thick-walled structure dominates the space as it did 250 years ago.

At that time, the area occupied by Montréal houses was confined to what we now call Old Montréal. However, Montréal was a city at the crossroads of important trade routes. Throughout the years, its history was influenced by the First Nations, the French, the British, and the Americans.
